Home of a Champion
Hillburn House, Taghmon

THE BIRTHPLACE of a champion racehorse for the horse enthuasist is like Graceland for an Elvis impersonator home.

And so it is with some interest that the home of champion race horse, ‘Numbersixvalverde’, has come on the market. It was on this land that the winner of the 2006 Aintree Grand National was bred by Major Bagnel Boyd.

Today, Hillburn House is a distinctive property, memorable for its sense of peace and place. The land is in good heart, well drained and bounded by rivers, natural boundaries and the public road.

There is a sense in Hillburn of a place apart. Hillburn House dates from 1795 when it was first built for the then Rector of Taghmon, Robert Hawkshaw.

It now stands on 107 acres of warm, good land well defined by natural boundaries on all sides. Hillburn, like any building that is over 200 years old, has seen many changes over the course of its history. While the house certainly isn’t in the first bloom of its youth, the building is currently in use as a cheerful family home with a sense of faded grace.

The varied outbuildings and loose boxes around the farmyard are suitable for a wide range of uses.

The possibility of once again raising a champion racehorse on this land is sure to be an incentive to many potential buyers.

The ground floor of this auspicious building has two drawing rooms, a sitting room, study and conservatory. It is easy to imagine Rector Hawkshaw hosting lavish dinner parties for the great and the good of Taghmon in this house. Unfortunately, the house has fallen into some disrepair in recent years and the new owner will have to under take some considerable renovations in order to establish Hillburn House as one of the great homes in the area once again.

There is also a kitchen, pantry, utility room, two toilets and a shower room on the ground floor, which shows the size of the house but also the amount of renovations that will need to be carried out.

The first floor has five bedrooms and one bathroom.

There is also a separate apartment that has been added in recent years. It is self contained as it incorporates a kitchen/diner, bedroom and bathroom, ideal for any visiting guests. With over one hundred acres of prime land surrounding this old house and over two hundred years of history, Hillburn House is in an ideal location half way between New Ross and Wexford. Who knows, in a few years time we could all be cheering on another Grand National winner from the Model County.
