Some mysterious scouts
A PRICELESS heirloom was our portion this week when we were invited to the residence in Shelmalier East of sportsman and retired Selskar merchant, Gerry Foley.
Tripping over a forest of hurleys, his special reason for the sumptuous reception was the presentation to Furlong at Large of a family heirloom photograph wherein he personally led a troop of green Wexford Boy Scouts into the far off jungles of Dungarvan.
Those forests were full of hyenas and wicked ruffians but, undaunted, he led them into the haunts of bears and badgers and brought them out again.
Now retired to consultancy in Ardcavan, he begs our readership to identify all these lads he trained to live and thrive on desert islands if they were ever shipwrecked.
Chief platoon commander Gerry Foley is at back left, hatless. Alongside him is Bernard McGuinness who swam all the way from Monck Street.
It is suspected that the two at right back are Alan Hore and Dick Hanton, now resident in Knockbine, Wellingtonbridge. It is also suspected that there are certainly two if not three Sherwoods of Maudlintown, John, Vincent and Tom.
Anyhow, to any reader with positive information there will be a reward.
