Fitzhenry’s playing days in doubt after freak injury

THERE ARE real fears that Damien Fitzhenry’s playing days could be over after he suffered serious injury in a club game last week.

Damien was assisting the Duffry Rovers’ junior footballers in the All-County League Division 2 final win over St. Joseph’s at St. Patrick’s Park on Tuesday of last week when the incident occurred.

He was gathering possession out on the right corner of the country-end early in the second-half when he caught his foot in the turf in a completely innocuous incident and twisted his right knee, resulting in a fractured knee-cap.

The injury was operated upon at Whitfield Clinic in Waterford on Thursday last before ‘Fitzy’ was released the following day.

At 36 years of age he faces a real battle to restore the knee to sufficient strength to absorb the rough and tumble of competitive action, and the man himself admits to EchoSport that: “I doubt very much if I will ever play again. We will just have to wait to see – I am not totally giving up hope. But I am most definitely gone for the rest of this year anyway.”

If this horrible setback does indeed spell the end of Damien’s playing career it is a particularly heartbreaking development considering how he only retired from the intercounty scene earlier this year with a view to concentrating his energies on trying to help Duffry Rovers bring home more silverware.

It was one of his stated aims at the time to help his great friend Derek Watchorn, who is in charge of the Duffry juniors, realise the ambition of winning the county junior ‘C’ football championship after demonstrating great potential in recent years. Damien was also anxious to help the club regain the senior hurling status which they lost last year.

Already he has achieved plenty of distinction with his beloved club.

The youngest of 15 children, Damien was part of the Duffry’s senior squad along with seven of his brothers as they strung together a remarkable seven county senior football championships on the trot between 1986 and 1992, before adding another in 1994.
