FAI ambassador Ray looks forward to Wexford visit

FORMER IRELAND and Liverpool goal scoring ace Ray Houghton will be among the personalities in Wexford for the FAI AGM and week-long Festival Football which gets underway in a little over two weeks time.

Ray, who won a remarkable 73 caps for Ireland, now holds the title of FAI Ambassador.

He will be joined by another Ireland great, current FAI Technical Director Packie Bonner, for the festivities which are in the Model County this year to mark the Wexford Football League’s 50th anniversary.

The Festival of Football has been a huge success since its inception in 2007.

Kerry hosted the event then, with Mayo being chosen in 2008 and Monaghan the hosts last year. The big event will be moving to Clare in 2011 and a number of Clare League officials will be in Wexford in a few weeks time to see at first hand the amount of organisation which is involved.

FAI officials will attend events around the county from Monday, August 16th to Thursday, August 19th and one of the features of the Festival will be the street activities in the four main towns.

The FAI delegation will be in the Enniscorthy and Bunclody areas on Monday while the Gorey area will be on Tuesday’s agenda and Wednesday will see the FAI party in New Ross.

Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni will join the guests at the FAI Street Activities on the Quay in Wexford town on Thursday.

The FAI Pre-AGM Delegates’ Dinner will be held in White’s Hotel on Friday, August 20th and earlier that day there will be a press conference at Ferrycarrig Park at which the Irish squad for the September European Championship qualifying games will be announced.

The FAI AGM will be held in White’s Hotel on Saturday, commencing at noon and Ferrycarrig Park will host a Womens’ Senior World Cup qualifier with Ireland taking on Russia that afternoon.

FAI President David Blood and FAI CEO John Delaney, along wth the aforementioned Ray Houghton and Packie Bonner, say that they are looking forward to visiting Wexford and seeing first-hand the wonderful facilities which clubs around the county now have.

A full itinerary of the events will be published in coming editions.
