BBQ raises €18,000
Over 600 steaks were thrown on the barbie in Gorey last weekend which helped to raise €18,000 for County Wexford Hospice Homecare.
The event, organised by North Wexford Hospice Homecare, was the 20th annual barbecue organised by the group and was a huge success with over 700 tickets being sold.
The event took place on Saturday evening in the Amber Springs Hotel with food sponsored by Slaney Meats and the chefs from the Amber Springs giving their time for free for the worthy cause.
Other sponsors included Cullen’s Veg, Dan Kinsella and Stafford’s Bakery who donated all the desserts for the evening.
“There was a great atmosphere in the hotel for the event and we were lucky to have a fine evening which meant people could eat their meals outside,” Rosemary Melbourne told the Echo this week.
While the attendees were enjoying the food, they were kept entertained by a number of groups. The Bass Brothers and the Brendan Kennedy Band provided the music for on the evening and the Deirdre Furlong School of Irish Dancing performed on the night.
All money raised will go towards the County Wexford Hospice Homecare which now provides a seven-day-a-week service in the county providing nursing and palliative care to ill patients.
“While the HSE and the Irish Cancer Society provide a certain amount of funding, by far and away the most money comes from fundraising.” The cost of running the service per year is approximately €500,000.
