Minors battle back to deliver more All-Ireland glory

Wexford 3-11 Tipperary 3-7
TWO GOALS from Clara Donnelly at crucial times in the game ensured that the All-Ireland ladies football minor ‘B’ trophy would take its place alongside the under-14 trophy in the Wexford cabinet after a great comeback win over Tipperary in last Saturday afternoon’s final at Freshford, County Kilkenny.

This was Tipperary’s second attempt to claim the title, having last year lost out Roscommon.

So they left no stone unturned in their quest for glory, sending scouts to Wexford’s semi-final against Armagh.

But the one factor that they did not allow for was how much Wexford also wanted this title.

However, for the first 30 minutes the large number of supporters that travelled from Wexford had little to cheer about as the opposition set up home in the Wexford half of the field, notching two goals and six points to leave seven points separating the sides at the break (2-6 to 0-5).

But Wexford manager Billy Donnelly knew that his girls had not turned up for the first-half, and in fairness to the team they were well aware that they needed to up their game a couple of notches if they were to get back into contention.

This they did, as eight minutes after the restart Wexford had closed the gap to 2-6 to 2-5, with Clara Donnelly hitting the back of the Tipperary net in the first minute, and four minutes later Tipperary netminder Jennifer Russell had to pick the ball out of her net again after Aisling Murphy drove a penalty to Russell’s right to really bring Wexford back in the game.

Tipperary only registered two scores in the secondhalf, one of which saw Eimear Meyler lob a long free in over Charlotte McCormack’s crossbar, but the ball dropped in to the back of her net.

McCormack protested that the ball had actually dropped through a hole in the top of the net, but despite her protests the green-flag was raised.

Siobhan Condon tagged on what proved to be Tipp’s final point to put her side five points clear (3-7 to 2-5) as the game moved into its final quarter.

With less than five minutes to go Wexford found an extra gear, Clara Donnelly goaling for the second time, and after points from Redmond and Tormey the sides were level for the first-time.

Wexford continued to press, with points from Redmond and Murphy putting them in the drivingseat by 3-10 to 3-7.

Tipperary gave the dice one final throw, Grainne Gorman weaving through the Wexford defence to fire a rocketlike shot towards McCormack’s goal.

But the ever alert Wexford no.1 was equal to the shot, diving full length to her right to push the ball out for a ‘45 which was cleared from the danger-area.

With the countdown clock showing that there five minutes remaining, Wexford were awarded a second penalty, and Katie Redmond kept her cool to merely tap the ball over to ensure victory for Wexford, with the President of the Ladies’ Gaelic Football Association and adopted Wexford-man, Pat Quill congratulating both teams, their mentors and all those involved. While commiserating with Tipperary, he was delighted to present the trophy to Wexford captain, Charlotte McCormack, and the ‘player of the match’ award to Katie Redmond.
