Masterson edges tight contest

Castletown 0-11 Gusserane 0-10
CASTLETOWN NEEDED an injury-time ‘45 from Wexford senior goalkeeper Anthony Masterson to prevail over Gusserane in this hard fought WFC county senior football championship Group B second round clash at sunny Oylegate on Sunday afternoon.

The sides gave everything they had from starttofinish and there was never more than three points between the teams, who were level on no fewer than four occasions.

The trend of inter-county goalkeepers coming up the field to score frees or ‘45s has grown this year, with Limerick’s Brian Scanlon and Dublin’s Stephen Cluxton the most notable.

At Oylegate, fans were treated to the Wexford netminder pointing the crucial placed-ball, with the one difference being that he was liningout at midfield for Castletown.

Former county senior Gary O’Grady did have a chance to equalise with the last kick of the game, but his free from a difficult angle went narrowly wide.

This was a game in which both teams definitely deserved to get something from it, and there were great duels throughout the pitch, including Castletown’s Risteard Kinsella and Shane Cullen, Conor Carty and Gusserane’s Walter Cosgrave, and in particular the midfield battle, where Gusserane duo Adrian Flynn and Philip Wallace at times reigned in this sector, yet Masterson and Jesse Foley also had some success.

Castletown opened the stronger, and were three points to the good after frees from three different free-takers, James Holmes, Masterson and Conor Carty.

The highlight of the first-half was the battle between the speed merchants Walter Cosgrave and Conor Carty, and after Cosgrave showed the lightning fast Carty a clean pair of heels, an outstanding block by the alert Colm Morris led to Adrian Flynn opening Gusserane’s account from a ‘45.

Flynn was the stand-out player in this period, and he then ran through from midfield to score a great point, before James Holmes and Gary O’Grady exchanged frees. Two further points from each side left Castletown ahead 0-6 to 0-5 at half-time.

Frees from Adrian Flynn and Killian Kehoe brought Gusserane ahead by 0-7 to 0-6, but Castletown replied with the next four points. A pass from Jody O’Shaughnessy set up Eddie Condren for a great score, followed by a great run and point from Brendan Halpin on 40 minutes.

Andy Merrigan and a Holmes free brought the score to 0-10 to 0-7, as Gary O’Grady replied with a great score.

Frees from Killian Kehoe and O’Grady then brought the sides level with two minutes left, as the supporters from both sides urged the teams on to try to find a winning score.

Then, a minute-and-a-half into injury-time Castletown were awarded the ‘45 which Masterson sent sailing over the bar.

From the kick-out, Robert Corcoran made a great run for Gusserane, before being fouled for the last free, from which O’Grady was narrowly wide.

Castletown Richard Farrell, Noel Morris, Conor Carty (0-1 free), Risteard Kinsella, Colin Molloy, Colm Morris, Danny Gardiner, Jimmy Fogarty, Anthony Masterson (0-3, 1 ‘45, 1 free), Eddie Condren (0-1), James Holmes (0-4 frees), James Lanigan, Brendan Halpin (01), Jody O’Shaughnessy, Andy Merrigan (0-1).
