Quigley double lands camogie derby spoils

Wexford 2-10 Kilkenny 0-10
A BRILLIANT first half display, which saw them surge ahead by eleven points at half-time, paved the way for the Wexford senior camogie team to end Kilkenny’s perfect run in qualifying as two Evelyn Quigley goals ensured that the locals prevailed in last Saturday afternoon’s Gala All-Ireland championship closing group clash at drizzly Wexford Park.

With both teams having already qualified for the All-Ireland semi-final the result of this derby clash was irrelevant, although Wexford will have gained a degree of further encouragement as they now head into the business-end of the championship determined to at least get to September’s final.

Wexford were strong from the off against the Cats and got the best possible start when Evelyn Quigley buried the ball in the Kilkenny net in the second-minute, with the eagle-eyed umpires spotting that the ball had actually crossed the ‘line before a Kilkenny defender desperately cleared.

Ursula Jacob added a pointed free before another nice passage of play set up Jacob to add another point. Bríd Gordon was denied a goal by Kilkenny before Jacob connected on a free from Mary Leacy to fashion another point.

The Wexford defence was dealing capably with whatever Kilkenny had to offer, although Kilkenny did eventually get on target after 14 minutes when Michelle Quilty sent over a free (1-3 to 0-1).

However, it was quickly negated by Una Leacy before Ursula Jacob (free) exchanged points with Kilkenny wing-forward, Katie Power.

But Wexford were very much in charge, and after a number of failed attempts, Josie Dwyer caught a puck-out and passed to Katriona Parrock who dispatched to Evelyn Quigley for the Rathnure ace to net her second personal goal in the 24th-minute.

Jacob tagged on another pointed free moments before team captain Una Leacy sustained a worrying hand injury, which saw her replaced temporarily by Lenny Holohan, before the sides broke at half-time with Wexford holding a 2-7 to 0-2 advantage.

Thankfully Leacy was able to resume with a now bandaged hand, but she had an early second-half wide before club-mate Ursula Jacob was impeded at the expense of a free which Jacob pointed. Kilkenny then pegged back points through Ann Dalton and Michelle Quilty.

But Wexford were boosted as Caroline Murphy made a welcome return to action after an injury enforced lay-off, making her first appearance in this year’s championship as she replaced Ferns club-mate Josie Dwyer.

Meanwhile, Michelle Quilty hit back with a pointed free for Kilkenny in the 41st-minute which was negated by Ursula Jacob.

However, Kilkenny then strung together a few points courtesy of Quilty (2 frees) and Kelly Hamilton (free) to narrow the gap after 52 minutes.

While Ursula Jacob responded with another point just before full-time (2-10 to 0-8) Kilkenny didn’t give up, and home ‘keeper Mags D’Arcy did brilliantly to prevent Kilkenny substitute Laura Kavanagh from goaling in a one-on-one situation as the visitors tried to snatch a late victory.

They did add two injury-time points through Quilty (free) and Katie Power, but Wexford had done enough in the first-half to ensure they won the day, and the ‘Gala Performance Award’ was won by wing-back, Aoife O’Connor after a starring display by the Rathnure woman.
