Kilanerin find six of best in strong finish
Kilanerin 0-12 Adamstown 0-7 2008 COUNTY champions Kilanerin scored the last six points of the game to see off a brave Adamstown side in their second round WFC county senior football championship Group C game at Wexford Park on Saturday evening.
In a close-fought game, the teams fought it out score for score for long periods, until the Kilanerin forwards found their shooting boots and with it their second victory to win through to the quarter finals.
The ability to close out close games is something all of the top teams have, be it Kerry or Tyrone, Kilkenny or Tipperary. This comes with experience, and this Kilanerin side is full of footballers who have ‘been there and done that’ in county finals.
And while the pace that we once saw in their fluid passing movements may not always be there, players like Pat and Matty Forde, Seamus and Gordon Hughes and John Hegarty know all about winning close games.
And where Messrs Forde (Matty) and Hegarty once brought youth and fresh legs to this side, you can now add the names of Aidan Jones, Gavin O’Toole and Peter Hughes.
Adamstown, for their part, contributed to a good game of football, with Eric Bradley showing why many regard him as one of the best midfielders in Leinster, while wing-back and wing-forward James Breen and Michael Furlong impressed greatly, and should figure in a purpleand-gold jersey in the coming seasons.
Adamstown started the brighter and opened the scoring through a Shane White free, before an excellent point from wingback James Breen was answered by his direct marker, as Matty Forde opened Kilanerin’s account with a free after four minutes.
Kilanerin then began to find their feet, with good points from Gavin O’Toole, Tommy Boland and John Hegarty after 12 minutes.
But Eric Bradley came into the game strongly as Adamstown hit four unanswered points. Bradley’s younger brother Shane first scored a good point, before a great score from Shane White with the outside of his right boot from all of 40 yards brought the sides level.
Barry Power then stretched Adamstown ahead on 28 minutes, before White and Matty Forde exchanged pointed frees, leaving the New Ross district men ahead by 0-6 to 0-5 at half-time. Matty Forde brought the sides level again seven minutes into the second half, before county panelist Michael Furlong pointed a free for Adamstown after 39 minutes.
Incredibly, this would be the last score for Adamstown, as the Kilanerin men would score six further points.
John Hegarty showed he still has that scoring touch with points after 40 and 44 minutes, before a spell of 12 scoreless minutes was broken by the loudest cheer of the game, as Kilanerin substitute Bobby Hughes was on the field ofplay a mere 20 seconds when he received the ball 40 yards from goal and shot straight over the ‘bar, after which Matty Forde added a close-in free.
The final say of the game was left to Gavin O’Toole, as Matty Forde’s nephew showed that classy forward play runs in the family by scoring two beautiful points from the covered stand side of the pitch on 60 minutes and two minutes into added-time.
The only sour note was in the dying seconds, as Kilanerin’s David Byrne appeared to head-butt Barry Power, who received a second yellow while Byrne escaped sanction to the surprise of the crowd.
