Slipstream Cycling Club

It was a good turnout for Slipstream CC’s first training race of the season, with a field of over 25 riders and all the Wexford clubs well represented on the day.

About 4kms into the race Andrew Bracken from Slaney CC made an early break but was chased down by the end of the first circuit. Denis McCarthy of Slipstream also made several attempts off the front with one of his breaks enabling him to stay away for over 22km but he was finally caught with 9kms to go.

It turned out to be a day for the rider from the south of the county with Wexford Wheelers man Dave Walsh and two Barrow Wheelers men, Hugh Byrne and Greg Dempsey nipping off the front to keep away to the finish line - the honours went to Dave Walsh.

Next week’s training race shall be over the same route as the road is in good condition and not too much traffic to deal with. The race will start around 10.30a.m. on Sunday, February 21 at Toss Byrnes, Inch. There will be a sign on from 10a.m. and all local riders are welcome to take part.

Gorey Community School

Moved by the tragedy of the fallout from the Haiti earthquake, students from Ms. Alison Doyle’s 3rd Year CSPE class, decided to carry out a school-wide collection.

They collected the money during the class tutor period, on Friday morning and were overwhelmed by the response from the student body, which was extraordinary.

They decided to include the collection as part of their CSPE Action Project, and the final sum amounted to €1402.84, which they donated to the UNICEF Haiti Fund.

Publicity for the collection was carried out by Jesse Larkin and Colin Doran. School management and staff were deeply impressed by the goodwill and generosity of the student body and the organisers.
