Camogie bid off to best possible start
Wexford 2-17 Dublin 0-5 WEXFORD GOT off the best possible start in their bid to hold onto the National Camogie League Division 1 crown when they overcame Dublin at Monamolin on Sunday afternoon by a massive 18-points thanks largely to a dominant second-half display.
Dublin had first advantage of the wind, but it was Wexford who got off to a dream start when Lenny Holohan netted in the fourth minute.
Team-mate Caroline Murphy then pointed after a neat move, but it was negated when Ciara Lucey sent over a free for the opposition.
Lucey added a similar score after Mary Leacy (free) and Áine Codd (2) had each knocked over a few points to help the locals pull clear by 1-4 to 0-2 as they settled nicely.
Points were again exchanged, with Lenny Holohan obliging for Wexford after some nice play by Caroline Murphy and Codd.
The reply came from Alison Maguire who then added a second personal point before the sides each fired wide.
Further good work by Áine Codd earned a free which new Wexford captain Una Leacy sent over.
In a closely contested opening 30 minutes the sides again traded points nearing the end of the half, with Una Leacy (free) exchanging with Sherry Mannion, while Wexford defended superbly for the remainder, with Karen Atkinson leading by example at the back as the home-side eventually broke at half-time with a 1-7 to 0-5 lead.
Now with the wind at their backs, Wexford wasted no time establishing superiority as they started to pick-off scores at their ease.
Indeed, Lenny Holohan grabbed a quick point on the restart before newcomer to the senior team, Fiona Kavanagh got on the scoresheet when pointing from play. Substitute Kate Kelly then found Una Leacy whose shot was stopped by Dublin ‘keeper, Stephanie Carthy.
Lenny Holohan added another point before a long-range strike from Mary Leacy found her younger sister Una, who shot over.
Opposing attacker Louise O’Hara made a good run through only to see her shot saved by Wexford’s alert goalie Mags D’Arcy.
Dublin were increasingly finding it extremely hard to create any scoring opportunities as the Wexford defence stood strong.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the field, Kate Kelly, Una Leacy and Áine Codd each pointed by the 40th-minute. The vigilance of this Wexford unit was again evident when a sideline cut by Dublin’s Elaine O’Meara was well read by Una Leacy, who intercepted the ball and cleared the danger.
Nevertheless, Ciara Lucey again tried to boost the struggling Dubs when she hammered a 21-yard free low and hard, but Mags D’Arcy was alive to the threat and she kept her net intact.
Moments later Una Leacy ran on to the ball and finished to the net, giving the ‘keeper no chance and putting Wexford well out of sight.
Ciara Storey and Fiona Kavanagh (2) tagged on further points to complete a good day’s work by the purple-and-gold, with the new management team of JJ Doyle, Tommy Roche and Joe Brennan surely being happy with the way the girls performed.
Their next test comes on Sunday at home to Galway, who hammered Clare last weekend by 3-16 to 1-5.
