Calls for Avenue to be repaired

A GOREY town councillor has called on developers to return one of the town’s main streets to its former glory.

Cllr. Malcolm Byrne is insisting that the road surface at the Avenue, Gorey, be repaired before the summer.

Cllr. Byrne has demanded county council officials call to account any developer or agency that dug up the road in recent years and ensure that they fully reinstate the road to the condition in which they originally found it.

He said: “It is outrageous that a major road into the town and one that has historically been a pleasant, welcoming vista has been left in an appalling state for so long. I accept that development work had to be carried out but when this work is done, the road should have been repaired.”

Funding of €140,000 has been made available by the Government to upgrade the footpaths on the Avenue and there are also plans to regulate the parking situation, including the introduction of pay parking.

Cllr. Byrne warned against the council picking up the tab where others failed to carry out the appropriate repairs.

“Those responsible for digging up the road must ensure that they repair it.”
