Good account by minor footballers
Louth 0-14 Wexford 1-9 ALTHOUGH THEY struggled during the second half, the county minor footballers gave a reasonably good account of themselves in last Saturday afternoon’s narrow defeat to Louth in the opening round of the Leinster League at the grounds of the Dundalk Gaels.
Considering that Wexford preparations are at a very early stage, and that they were minus a number of injured players, the effort was quite encouraging.
But the selectors, David Byrne (Adamstown, manager), Conor Berry (St. Anne’s), Larry Doyle (HWH-Bunclody), together with Aidan O’Leary (Shelmaliers) and Nigel Delaney (Gusserane) will be keen to see definite progress when their charges host Offaly in the next round of the league on March 20th as the countdown continues to the April 17th championship opener against Wicklow.
In terms of the league, the other section features Kilkenny, Wicklow and Longford, and at the completion of group competition there will be three finals on March 27th, with the pairings for same being determined by the finishing positions in the respective groups i.e. first in Group A v first in Group B and so forth.
Points from Séan Ring (2 frees) and Graeme Cullen (a brother of recent Wexford senior Shane) helped Wexford to stay in touch with Louth and trail by just 0-3 to 0-4 before a succession of late points by the purple-and-gold turned the tables by 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time, with Ring (2 frees) and centre-forward, Jonathan Bealin finding the range for a Wexford outfit which worked hard throughout the field.
The home-side pumped up the pressure in the secondhalf, but the Wexford backs did well under this sustained charge, with the likes of Eddie Hughes, Joey Aherne and the versatile Colm Browne showing good example.
Nevertheless, Louth grabbed the first four points of the new half to forge ahead by 0-8 to 0-6 before Seán Ring sandwiched another point for the Wee County with similar scores from frees.
The locals then grabbed four of the next five points, with Ring shooting another off a free for Wexford who were given a shot-in-the arm when full-forward, Alan Tobin caught a long delivery before sending a left-footed drive across the ‘keeper and to the net for a superb goal with a few minutes remaining.
That cut the gap to 0-13 to 1-9, and while Louth had the last say with an insurance point, Wexford left with a better idea of what areas they need to sharpen-up in to be ready for the championship derby against Wicklow.
Wexford – Cormac O’Brien (Glynn-Barntown), Colm Browne (Clonard), Eddie Hughes (Kilanerin), Joey Ahern (Castletown), Michael Bowler (Duffry Rovers), Graham Carty (St. Mary’s-Maudlintown, capt.), Matthew Cody (RathgarogueCushinstown), Colm Kehoe (Cloughbawn), Dean Wright (Blackwater), Stephen Hughes (Kilanerin), Jonathan Bealin (Castletown, 0-1), Kieran Butler (Geraldine O’Hanrahans), Graeme Cullen (Gusserane, 01), Alan Tobin (Starlights, 10), Seán Ring (Ballyhogue, 07 frees).
Subs: Billy Wright (St. Fintan’s) for Stephen Hughes; Glen Murphy (Shelmaliers) for Dean Wright; Éanna Murphy (Duffry Rovers) for Colm Kehoe (inj.); Niall Moore (St. Fintan’s) for Seán Ring; also, Gavin Murphy (Cloughbawn), Stephen Finn (HWH-Bunclody), James Codd (Duffry Rovers).
