Crime spree in North Wexford
RESIDENTS AND business owners will be wary following the third armed robbery taking place in north Wexford within a week.
Last Wednesday, two armed raiders entered the Post Office in Kilmuckridge and stole a substantial amount of money. This raid followed two armed robberies in Ballycanew and Kilmuckridge the previous weekend.
Gardaí in Wexford have set up a divisional unit to investigate all three crimes drawing on gardaí from Gorey, Enniscorthy and Wexford. The team has been charged with looking into the possibility that all three raids are connected.
Residents in north Wexford towns and villages are worried that more similar attacks will take place in the coming weeks and months, believing that a lack of Garda presence will be like an invitation to criminals to come back to the area.
The robbery in Kilmuckridge happened at 4.14p.m. on Wednesday when students from Coláiste an Átha, which is located across the road from the Post Office, were leaving the premises.
The postmistress, Emily Hammel, who was the only person in the Post Office at the time of the robbery, was also confronted by armed raiders in the same Post Office in 2004 when another substantial amount of money was taken.
